So, you've got your copy of Pokemon Black or Pokemon White, but which of those three little guys do you want to take along for the ride? Unless you happen to have a thing for Fire, Grass, or Water types, or one of the new monsters captured your eye for some other reason, it can be a pretty difficult decision.

Since we already established why starters matter, we've prepared this quick, easy guide to get you going on your way to the Unova region's Elite 4 with the perfect partner.

So smug... so very smug.

If you're looking for a challenge, choose Snivy, the Grass-type Pokemon. Having him as your main monster will provide the most difficult play through, which is perfect for seasoned Poke masters, as well as bold Pokemon noobs.

This is because, while the first gym's type rotates to always be advantageous against you (if you choose Snivy, for instance, the gym leader will use Fire-type Pokemon), the next few gyms and the types of Pokemon you encounter along the way can mean rough going for a trainer and their Grass Pokemon. Having a Fire-type in your party helps, but you don't encounter one of those until after you've already gotten your third gym badge.

If all of this sounds like an exciting challenge, then Snivy's the one for you, but be aware that he loses those cute little arms in his final evolution, Serperior. While he still looks awesome, this sudden lack of limbs does take getting used to. Not a deal-breaker by any means, but something to keep in mind. He's also a smug, little badass, which has no effect on gameplay whatsoever, but if you like his style, then definitely choose Snivy.

"Oink!" I mean... "Tepig!"

If you're looking for more of an easy ride, you might want to go with Tepig, the Fire-type Pokemon. This little rascal makes for a much easier play through since his next evolutions, Pignite and Emboar, are both Fire and Fighting type, which means that (first, rotational gym aside) this little piggie is type-advantageous to the first three gyms and neutral to the fourth (meaning it won't give or take extra damage, which is still pretty good).

Tepig will also have you covered for the wild Pokemon you'll encounter during the first few towns and through Pinwheel Forest, which you go to after earning your second badge and contains tons of Bug type Pokemon (which are weak against Fire types).

If an easier play through with a fun-loving pig guy who eventually evolves to look a lot like a luchador sounds up your ally, then definitely go with Tepig.

Aww, he's reaching out for a hug.

If you're looking for a little less of a challenge than Snivy and his stacked odds provide, but you also want a bit more difficulty than Tepig's cakewalk will allow, then Oshawott, the Water-type Pokemon, is the starter for you.

With Oshawott, you'll have a much easier time trudging your way through the game's beginning, but be aware that his final evolution, Samurott, looks completely different from his first two forms, in that it's completely un-otterlike in every way possible. Of course, this has absolutely no effect on gameplay, but you might want to check out who Oshawott is going to evolve into and make sure you're okay with that before choosing him.

Whichever of these three lovable monsters you decide to go with, you should still have a great time journeying with them through this brand, new region. Still, it's a decision you'll have to live with through the whole game, so choose wisely, and best of luck, Poke maniacs!

Now it's decision time-- which of these three starters do you like best? Let us know in the comments section below!
